ROSS MATHIE

110 games (1969 - 1972)

Ross Mathie - a popular Kilmarnock number 9 and one of Scottish football's great enthusiasts.

59 goals in 110 games. Then he was gone. But his three years at Rugby Park were the start of a relationship which has lasted decades.

The steep learning curve of Ross’s early days in the junior ranks with Cambuslang Rangers steeled him for the Scottish top flight, where uncompromising ‘60s defenders certainly adhered to the ‘defender first, footballer second’ mantra. Although Ross Mathie is quick to credit his teammates - Cook and McLean on the wings and strike partner Eddie Morrison - his own contribution to Kilmarnock’s success of the late 1960s cannot be questioned. With formidable aerial ability and a wholehearted style, he made an instant impact on the Rugby Park patrons; a support he became a member of in due course. Indeed, his popularity was barely affected by the role he played in Dumbarton’s 1973 relegation escape…achieved at the heartbreaking expense of his former teammates and friends.

Following a highly distinguished coaching career, Ross’s contribution to Kilmarnock was renewed with a role bringing his expertise to the club’s Football Memories group.

As he says himself, once you experience Ayrshire’s finest team, ”you’re Killie til you die.”
